3D Animator

Brass Token is an independent game studio that develops third person story-driven action games.  Led by AAA industry veterans, we are looking for a 3D Animator to work on creating realistic human performances as well as creature animations for a 3rd person horror game. This position will involve both cinematic and gameplay animation.

The ideal candidate lives in Vancouver, BC. The studio will be working remotely for the foreseeable future, with the intention to return to a part-time remote/office workplace setting once things are safe.

Responsibilities:

  • Process and assemble motion capture cinematic scenes using Motionbuilder and Maya.
  • Apply pre-recorded facial data on characters.
  • Some keyframe animation for both creatures and humans.
  • Identify & fix any bugs that may arise and tracking of that information using Jira.

Requirements:

  • One shipped title (or equivalent experience)
  • A demo reel which demonstrates a good knowledge of the principles of animation
  • A solid understanding of best practices regarding Motionbuilder, Maya and Perforce
  • Familiarity with the Unreal engine
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team

Nice-to-have:

  • (After covid) ability to work on-site in our Vancouver office
  • Some knowledge of gameplay animation systems, state machines and UE blueprints.
  • Experience freelancing or working from home prior to Covid
  • A love for games and animation!

Quality Assurance Lead

Brass Token is an independent game studio that develops third person story-driven action games.  Led by AAA industry veterans we are looking for a full-time Quality Assurance Lead to help bring an original melee-action horror title to PC and multiple consoles.

As the Quality Assurance Lead, you will manage and delegate tasks to the QA team, maintain multiple bug databases, and communicate with the development and publisher QA teams to ensure efficient resolution. You should have a broad understanding of QA best practices and be able to impart these to others on the team through oversight, documentation, and most importantly communication. Additionally you should have experience shipping a AAA game to both PC and consoles. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of Unreal Engine 4 and common workflows so that you can more adeptly manage the overall QA process as it relates to the development team.

The studio is based in Vancouver, BC and while we will be working remotely for the foreseeable future, our intention is to return to a part-time remote/office workplace setting once things are safe.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, reproduce, and report bugs to appropriate members of the development team.
  • Report on the states of bugs, features, and gameplay balance.
  • Facilitate communication between the QA team and the producer, publisher, and development team.
  • Manage the different aspects of QA best practices to ensure that the QA team has all the resources required to work as effectively and efficiently as possible.
  • Develop new and update old QA training programs and documentation.
  • Analyze upcoming content to determine at-risk areas and create contingency plans to more effectively test them.
  • Ensure that all members of the QA Team maintain an efficient, high quality workflow, which verifies that every aspect of the game has been tested.
  • Manage multiple bug databases through creating, prioritizing, tracking, and assigning bugs.
  • Work closely with a community manager upon release to allow for live issue reporting, and prioritization.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of video game QA testing experience, and 1+ years of experience in a QA leadership role.
  • Shipped at least one successful AAA video game to both console and PC in a QA role.
  • Experience with bug tracking and project management software (we use Jira).
  • Deeply familiar with QA methodology, standard practices, and what is required for a game to be released on both PC and consoles.
  • Understanding of the certification and submission requirements for console and PC platforms.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a passion for working with others both remotely and in person.

Recommended:

  • Experience with Jira, Slack, and Discord.
  • Experience working with outsourcers and external partners.
  • An understanding of development processes using Unreal Engine 4.
  • A passion for story-based games.

Senior Unreal Engine Programmer

Brass Token is an independent game studio that develops third person story-driven action games.  Led by AAA industry veterans, we are looking for a full-time senior programmer that has expert knowledge of Unreal Engine and proven experience with console video game development. This role is primarily responsible for leading the console development of a third person horror game on one or more platforms.  You will mix technical proficiency and creative collaboration with art and design to balance cutting edge visuals, console specific gameplay features, and optimized performance.

The ideal candidate lives in Vancouver, BC. The studio will be working remotely for the foreseeable future, with the intention to return to a part-time remote/office workplace setting once things are safe. The ability to engage in a COVID-19 safe environment may be required at times in the coming months to test different hardware configurations.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop new systems and maintain existing systematic Blueprints.
  • Take advantage of cutting-edge next generation console features.
  • Work closely with the team to help achieve performance targets on different console generations.
  • Problem-solve hitches and streaming bottlenecks with the content creators.
  • Help provide technical leadership and mentorship to all members of the team.
  • Break down high-level tasks and create realistic and achievable implementation plans that fit into the budget.
  • Assist with the creation of gameplay content and with the quality assurance of the game.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of professional software programming experience.
  • Proven development experience on game consoles.
  • At least 3 years experience working on shipped commercial titles.
  • Strong C++ programming and debugging skills.
  • Strong profiling and optimization skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of Unreal Engine and the Blueprint scripting language.
  • Familiarity with Unreal’s rendering system.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Senior Technical Artist

Brass Token is an independent game studio that develops third person story-driven action games.  Led by AAA industry veterans, we are looking for an experienced full-time Technical Artist who is passionate about pushing Unreal Engine to create realistic experiences in fantastic worlds. This role is responsible for being up to date on the latest developments in technology to help guide, support, and inspire the rest of the development team to increase visual efficiency and deliver the unexpected.

The Senior Technical Artist is a creator that takes advantage of Maya and Unreal’s ever-growing toolset to create and manage character rigs, develop shaders, and utilize techniques such as photogrammetry and motion capture within a real-time production setting. We have received a MegaGrant for advancing our artistic pipeline, so this is a great opportunity to push cutting edge visuals forward with the support of Epic Games.

The ideal candidate lives in Vancouver, BC. The studio will be working remotely for the foreseeable future, with the possibility to return to a hybrid remote/office workplace setting once COVID-19 concerns are over.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain character rigs and skinning on both realistic humanoid characters and creatures.
  • Work closely with outsourcing partners to help identify and review technical art requirements.
  • Experience creating and optimizing shaders and materials within Unreal.
  • Maintain and provide support for secondary animation, including cloth, accessories, and hair.
  • Empower and support artists, animators, and engineers in the use of the art pipeline and development of related tools.
  • Collaborate with animators and technical designers to maintain and grow the animation pipeline, including IK, facial, and motion capture.
  • Work with the Cinematics Team to support special case functionality (set piece moments, atmospherics).
  • Create, implement, and optimize special effects using Unreal’s Cascade and Niagara systems based on concept art, video reference
  • Play the game regularly and provide feedback and suggestions to the team as both a gamer and developer.
  • Provide hands-on support to artists and engineers on asset performance and cross platform optimization.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and keep the team apprised of your work progress, doing your best to ensure any anticipated problems or blocks are proactively addressed.

Requirements:

  • Proven experience with Unreal Engine and Maya. Must have shipped at least one successful AAA videogame or equivalent real-time media project.
  • Proficient with Maya scripts and tools.

  • A strong sense of initiative to take personal responsibility within a work from home setting.

Recommended:

  • Familiarity with MotionBuilder a plus.
  • Familiarity with motion capture, photogrammetry, and virtual production an asset
